YMCA and YWCA in Denmark is an ecumenical children’s and youth organization rooted in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark. However, you don’t have to be a Christian to attend our programs and activities.
Everyone is welcome, regardless of religious beliefs, nationality, race, gender, opinions, or social position.
YMCA and YWCA in Denmark have about 10.000 members. Our core activities aim at children and young people between 6 and 19 years. We also have programs for younger children and adults. We have 150 local associations spread across the country.
The YMCA and YWCA in Denmark is a member of World Alliance of YMCAs and World YWCA as well as the European level, YMCA Europe and YWCA in Europe.
The Y – Family
In Denmark, YMCA and YWCA have merged into a joint movement which was formed in 1976. The 10.000 members are spread throughout some 150 local associations and is governed by a female and a male president and a board with 50-50 repre¬sentation of men and women.
Many YMCA and YWCA activities in Denmark have from the early days been organized in separate organizations and still remain so – as YMCA Sports, YMCA Scouts, YWCA Girl Guides, YWCA Social Work, YMCA Social Work etc. Nine independent organizations now belong to the “Y-family” including Y’s Men Region Denmark.
Our vision in YMCA Denmark and YWCA Denmark
The national General Assembly held in April 2008 adopted a vision to inspire the move¬ment for the next four years: “Children and young people should know that they can believe in God – and that God believes in them”. This vision reflects the purpose of the movement and the need for a Christian contribution to our secularized society.
